Dear Mr. President,
Thank you for your recent visit to my beloved country, Kenya. It brought hope and inspiration to all Kenyans, in particular young girls and women at risk of FGM, child, early and forced marriage, and other forms of gender-based violence.
We write on behalf of The Girl Generation: Together to End FGM to say that we are thrilled by your public support for ending FGM and child marriage in your speech in Nairobi last weekend. The role of The Girl Generation is to galvanise global leaders, funders, organisations, affected communities, and especially young women and girls to come together in solidarity to end FGM in a generation.
President Obama, your condemnation of the practice of FGM is a clear signal that you are with us in our efforts. Your speech is a beacon of hope for a new generation of girls, who without FGM or child marriage can realise their rights and achieve their full potential. We thank you and we look forward to your leadership and support as we strive, together, to end FGM in one generation.
Dr Faith Mwangi-Powell
Global Director, The Girl Generation: Together to End FGM
