Face of Defiance: the photography exhibition celebrating FGM survivors launches in Senegal

12 July 2017

Our Global Ambassador Leyla Hussein and photographer Jason Ashwood are ecstatic to be partnering with The Girl Generation on expanding the Face Of Defiance project globally. This portrait exhibition featuring Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) survivors and campaigners seeks to broaden public awareness and to create a new positive dialogue about ending FGM. It aims to give exposure to the rights of women who should be empowered to speak out about FGM and provides them with the platform to break the cycle and become agents of change.

Following the success of the exhibitions in Washington, D.C. and Dublin, The Face of Defiance team and The Girl Generation will be photographing and sharing positive stories in Senegal. Our Programme Officer Soukeyna Diallo will be part of team to ensure this work is carried out accordingly and safely.

Leyla and Jason have dedicated this project to Efua Dorkenoo, former Global Director of The Girl Generation and leader of the end FGM movement.

This project was made possible thanks to funding and tremendous support from the Wallace Global Fund. For more information about Face of Defiance, please see the Guardian's feature.
