Developed with generous support from The Wallace Foundation, Turn Up The Volume's specific project objective is strengthened youth leadership for social change to end FGM in Nigeria and Kenya. It will target promising youth leaders from The Girl Generation's youth networks in Kenya and Nigeria (10 in each country, a mixture of men and women). It will take a Training of Trainers (ToT) approach to building the capacity of young leaders, encouraging them, and providing them with the necessary materials to cascade their learning to their peers within their networks.
The African grassroots movement to end FGM is gathering momentum, and many African countries and communities have made great strides with limited resources. We know that national youth-led social movements are powerful catalysts for change, with the potential to generate transformative shifts in power that are crucial to realising the rights of women and girls. Young people provide the inspiration for The Girl Generation - they are the heart and soul of the global movement to end FGM, and are agents of positive change and challengers of negative social norms.
The established Girl Generation team has come to know and understand the youth networks and their members well, and has identified several areas that require support. In Kenya and Nigeria, the youth networks are emerging organisations and are hugely energetic, however they are large countries with a huge need for more resources to address ending FGM. We want to support this energy and commitment and leverage the platform built by The Girl Generation and the End FGM Grants Programme to provide strategic support to these youth networks.
